A child’s health is the foundation of their ability to learn, play, and thrive. This was the central message of the Special Mansa Kunda Celebration, held under the theme “Intergenerational Dialogue on the Rights of Children in The Gambia.” The event brought together key stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding the welfare and rights of the nation’s children.
The Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, emphasized the critical link between health and education, noting: “Our children can’t go to school if they are not healthy.” He outlined the government’s progress in revitalizing the healthcare system—transforming outdated facilities, investing in modern medical equipment, and training a new generation of doctors and nurses to deliver quality care.
The Honourable Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare, Dr. Fatou Kinteh, shared a personal story underscoring confidence in the national healthcare system. Following an accident, she chose to undergo surgery in The Gambia rather than abroad, reporting a successful procedure that restored her arm’s full function—an achievement she described as proof of the system’s growing capacity.
Serving as Master of Ceremonies, the Honourable Minister of Information, Ismaila Ceesay, added another dimension, reminding participants that “The sickness of one parent can derail the life of a child.” His remarks highlighted the broader role of healthcare in safeguarding family stability and children’s futures.
The dialogue concluded with a strong collective message: protecting children’s health and rights is the most powerful investment in The Gambia’s future.
