On 19th August 2025, the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Unit of the Directorate of Public Health Services, with support from UNICEF Gambia, successfully hosted a High-Level National Consultative Meeting on Ending Open Defecation. This landmark event marked a significant step towards improving sanitation and public health across The Gambia.
The meeting convened a diverse and influential group of stakeholders, including policymakers, government officials, political leaders, representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community leaders, and other strategic partners with the aim to mobilize strong political support, enhance collaboration, and secure actionable commitments to eliminate open defecation and strengthen sanitation systems nationwide.
During the consultative session, participants discussed the current challenges facing sanitation coverage, explored evidence-based strategies for promoting sustainable hygiene practices, and shared insights on community-led approaches to foster lasting behavioral change. The meeting emphasized the critical importance of political will, cross-sector collaboration, and community engagement in achieving a clean and healthy environment for all Gambians.
Speaking at the event, officials from the WASH Unit reaffirmed their commitment to driving nationwide initiatives aimed at improving access to safe sanitation facilities, promoting proper hygiene, and protecting public health, particularly in rural and underserved areas. UNICEF Gambia also highlighted its continued support for technical assistance, and advocacy to ensure that no Gambian is left behind in the journey toward ending open defecation.
The Ministry of Health calls upon all stakeholders, government institutions, community-based organizations, private sector actors, and citizens to actively participate in ongoing efforts to improve sanitation and hygiene practices.
